Thermal Simulation of a Diesel Drive

Depending on the ambient conditions, a drive unit intended for the underfloor area of a diesel-hydraulic railcar can generate unfavorable thermal operating conditions. The thermal conductivity of the components (diesel motor, hydrodynamic transmission, cooling system, and generator) as well as radiation and convection play a role in this.

Using numerical simulation on the basis of the real 3D CAD data, the aim is on the one hand to safeguard potentially critical areas (rubber components, floor temperature, etc.) at a very early stage of the development and on the other to ensure optimal cooling of the drive system. Depending on the task and the development status, methods and tools adapted to the problem (hand calculations, parameter simulation, numerical simulation) will be applied in order to solve the task with an optimal cost-benefit ratio and avoid large and time-consuming development loops, particularly in the testing phase.
