Simulation and Optimization of Tank Containers for Locomotives

Helbling Technik tested the strength of a design of tank container and prepared strength verifications and acceptance reports for the authorities.

Aim:
As part of a vehicle approval process, simulation was required for a tank container filled with fuel with regard to mechanical strength in accordance with EN 12663 against knocks and operational stresses, as well as natural frequencies. The results were to be recorded in verification documentation for the approval authorities.

Our tasks:

  • The creation of a Finite Element Model on the basis of the customer’s CAD model
  • Simulation of the tank container under static and fatigue loads. The hydrostatic pressure of the fuel exerted on the surface shell of the container was also considered
  • Determining the natural frequencies
  • Where required, optimization of the design in close cooperation with the customer’s design department
  • Drawing up optimized design proposals on the basis of the calculation results
  • Verification of the joints (weld seams in accordance with EN 15085 and DVS 1612, bolted joints in accordance with VDI 2230)
  • The compilation of verification documentation for the authorities
