Wind Simulation for Cooling in Thermal Power Stations

Helbling Technik was contracted to carry out a CFD simulation to determine the power station's performance under the influence of ambient conditions. In areas with insufficient water reserves, the steam generated in power stations is cooled using air condensers. The interaction with existing systems must be taken into account in the planning of new power stations.

Our tasks:

  • Analytical modeling of the air-cooled condensor system
  • Simulating the complete system (steam cooling circuit) to determine the power station's performance
  • Evaluating the results and comparing the cooling performance of the individual design options
  • CFD simulation to determine the influence of ambient conditions (wind strength and direction) and the existing building on the cooling performance
  • Coming up with proposals for design enhancements and statements about risks
