Modernization of Regional Railway Stations

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) launched a project with a budget of around CHF 340 million to modernize 620 regional railway stations, and to make them more attractive and their design consistent. Helbling Technik was responsible for cost optimization in the development and realization phase.

Aim:
A significant aspect of this project was to create a cost-effective plan incorporating the elements designed by GIM Architekten in Bern before the invitation to public tender and to calculate the target price to an accuracy level of within 5% to 10%. This would mean that the element costs were already known for the project budgeting, an important cost optimization process could be completed at an early stage, and a basis had been established from which to evaluate the suppliers' bids.

Procedure:

  • Conducting a cost comparison of various technical options
  • Early predimensioning in order to save material and weight
  • Establishing options that made economic sense
  • Selecting manufacturing methods according to the quantities required
  • Carrying out an ongoing comparison of the design options
  • Maintaining close contact with expert suppliers
  • Recognizing and eliminating cost drivers
