Low Power Display Control

Control for a ¼ VGA colour graphics display for a battery-operated medical technology product was required with the longest possible battery life.

Procedure:

  • In order to keep the power consumption to a minimum, the decision was made not to use an independent graphics driver, but instead to use a microcontroller with an integrated DMA controller
  • SRAM modules were used as graphics memory in order to achieve the minimum operating and standby currents possible
  • An extremely efficient logic circuit was used to produce the necessary control signals

Result:

The display control allows static images to be reproduced in QVGA format and offers an optimized solution in terms of power consumption. It is therefore particularly suited for use in handheld devices which are designed to be operated by means of a graphically displayed menu structure.
