Locomotive Body for the most powerful diesel-hydraulic Locomotive in the World, the Maxima 40 by Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co. KG

Aim:

As part of a complete redevelopment, Helbling Technik developed an innovative and production-optimized steel structure for the locomotive body of the Maxima 40 from the design and type image. For the development, it was important to comply with standard EN 12663 and the crashworthiness requirements of EN 15227. All the manufacturing drawings for the production of the steel structure and the verification reports for the approval of the 126t locomotive had to be prepared.

Our tasks:

  • Development of a concept for the steel body structure for the 126t locomotive on the basis of the design image and with due regard to the requirements of the standards and the target weight.
  • Creation of a verification concept as the basis for the calculation with particular attention to crash requirements.
  • In close cooperation with our customer, the continuous development of the vehicle geometry took place in 3D CAD in a simultaneous engineering process.
  • In parallel to the development of the structural concept, an FEM model was created and was adapted in iterative steps, carefully coordinated with the design and in accordance with the constraints posed by strength and crash requirements.
  • Determining and optimizing the natural frequencies of the vehicle body.
  • Once the design work had been completed and the strength successfully calculated, the complete manufacturing documentation was drawn up for the production of the locomotive body.
  • A detailed verification report relating to the vehicle body strength and crashworthiness was prepared for the Federal Railway Authority (EBA).

Results:

  • Thanks to the systematic and optimized procedure with close cooperation between design, calculation and our customer, it was possible to complete the work to the tight schedule and to submit the manufacturing documentation to the customer after 5 months.
  • The vehicle passed the required tests and was approved by the authorities.
