Cost-Benefit-Analysis for Linux Migration

Helbling Technik was contracted to carry out an analysis to assess the complexity of a complete migration of the existing server infrastructure.  In its role as the national weather service, MeteoSchweiz carries out meteorological and climatological work which benefits the population, the economy, and public institutions. Assessment of the complexity of a complete migration of the existing server infrastructure required an analysis that demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of a migration while taking account of the potential opportunities and risks involved. In addition to the analysis, a rough plan of the possible migration served as the basis for making decisions about the long-term, company-wide IT strategy.

Our tasks:

  • Preparing SWOT analyses for migration scenarios
  • Assessing all relevant applications in the existing IT landscape with a view to porting them on a new platform
  • Estimating the IT security requirements involved in a migration
  • Defining the planning for a complete migration of the IT infrastructure
  • Estimating the cost/work involved in a complete migration
  • Preparing a recommendation

Customer benefits:

  • Establishment of a comprehensive basis for making decisions
  • Availability of a rough plan of the migration process
  • Knowledge of the opportunities and risks the scenarios pose        ,
