Bogie for Standard Coach IV (EW IV) for Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)
As part of a modernization process, EW IV trains are to be upgraded to travel at maximum speeds of 200km/h. In addition, various conversions are to be undertaken to the carriage bodies which, taken together, will lead to an increase in the carriage's weight. The objective is to investigate whether the existing bogie frames can absorb the increased operational loads.
With bogie frames, the fatigue strength is nearly always the dimensioning factor. In this case the fatigue loads needed to be defined and the mathematical simulations carried out. The analysis of the results had to establish whether the frames would be able to carry the operational loads for a further two to three decades.
