Calculation and Optimization of Traction Transformers
The structure of a traction transformer housing was optimized in such a way that it can withstand at minimum weight maximum operating loads. Helbling Technik checked transformers for a whole range of railway applications (high-speed trains, freight trains, commuter trains). The catenary voltage is changed on board of rolling stock for overland transportation by the traction transformer to a voltage, suitable for the drive system, which is typically between 1 and 2 kV. The traction transformer is mounted directly on the car body.
Procedure:
The structure of the transformer housing was optimized in such a way that it can withstand at minimum weight maximum operating loads. Evidence for a licensing authority was prepared which identified the fulfillment of the prescribed standards:- EN12663 Railway applications. Structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies. Part 1: Locomotives and passenger rolling stock
- DVS 1612 Design and endurance limit evaluation of butt and fillet welds in railway vehicle construction steels
- EN 15085 Railway applications. Welding of railway vehicles and components. Part 1: General
- VDI 2230 Systematic calculation of high duty bolted joints - Joints with one cylindrical bolt
- DIN EN 1993 Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures
The check is based on finite elements analysis. Load cases were calculated, in which a train is charged with shock or impact. The structure was designed in terms of the fatigue endurance limit. Here, the welding seams and joints were evaluated. During the development phase, the customer benefitted from our design optimization and improvement proposals.
